Experienced firsthand by the author's long journey amid hardship and determination, that endurance of midwives in modern America and the families they serve inspired the timely writing of this book.
AMERICAN MIDWIVES is an interesting and sometimes humorous anthology into the lives of some of today's midwives who work outside of the limelight. Steadfast, dedicated, they provide the kind of care needed by women and families in the USA.
It is their own experiences that tell the tale!

Motivated by Example
To be motivated takes something that inspires.
For some things that inspire me deeply, I am moved to share the insights to hopefully do some good. Sometimes to do that takes sacrifices of time and energy before things get moving along.
A chemist named Art Robinson is that kind of motivational inspiration. From his farm in Oregon, while a widower raising and homeschooling six children, he has managed to share his insights about education in this country, while taking on and expanding even world projects based upon sane and responsible science.
When I wondered how I was ever going to find the time for next steps in writing American Midwives, it suddenly dawned on me that answers could be found in many of Art's unique examples along with those of his grown children.
More about the Robinson famiy and educational resources.

Paid to Think
My dear departed Dad was an amazing thinker.
"Henk" spent several decades working for Hewlett Packard as a design engineer. A mere thought would develop into actual working devices for HP's projects.
As a young girl I went along on a Saturday, watching my tall, lean, Dutch father as he sat at his drafting table and designed, completely from scratch, something no one had ever thought of before. When finished, he smiled with that wonderful moustache, turned to me and said simply "Yah."
I still wonder what it might have felt like, having such a fabulous mind that a huge company like HP wanted on their team. To be paid...to think.
Wishful Thinking
The process of writing this book has been interesting.
The reality is more like the images seen in a movie about the reclusive writer surrounded by piles of books, stacks of paper, a plate with a half-eaten sandwich...
For me, however, it's my (pre-teen & teen) children's half-eaten sandwiches with their books and drawings strewn about. It's not that their schedule has become more full. But when I'm working on getting thoughts put together into the printed word (in "can't talk right now" mode), it seems the household opinion is that means I won't mind cleaning up after everyone else later.
I want to get it all "on paper" faster than what is humanly possibly. A scheduling of writing time seemed like a good idea until the only time slot available for that has been around midnight. Divine authority doesn't seem all that interested in intervening, either. So for now, it's still about squeezing in time for organizing pages and all.
In a fit of wishful thinking, I made a sign to put on the frig: 'Mom's busy writing ~ your chores start now ~ this means YOU!'
I figure that if they need the reminder repeated, all I'll have to do is put up more signs.
